"I've found from years of trial that the only way I can work is to make sketches in pencil from Nature purely as reference material for future use in the studio. In the past I have often made a stab at watercolours, pen & ink, wash, conte, charcoal, pastel, etc., in order to try to get something exhibitable direct from Nature but always fall back on reference sketches in graphite pencil."
