The ever-popular and endearing Claude A. Simard was born in 1943 in Quebec City. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in the mid 1960s. After spending time working in commercial design, Simard taught at Laval University in Quebec City from 1984 until 2001. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1981. Since 1974, Simard has mounted over 25 one-man exhibitions with significant commercial galleries across Canada, creating a substantial legacy of works.

Simard painted from his imagination and relied on his memory to create work defined by vibrant colour, masterful drawing, and rigorous composition. Known primarily for his bucolic and urban landscapes, as well as his paintings of flowers and people, his signature aesthetic is easily recognizable. A major force in Canadian painting, Claude A. Simard leaves behind an exceptional body of work that is joyful, serene, and filled with light.
