David Blackwood (1941–2022) established himself as an important Canadian printmaker during the 1960s, creating powerful etchings inspired by Newfoundland’s maritime traditions, and the hardships of the sealing industry. While studying at the Ontario College of Art, he began his celebrated Lost Party series in 1962, based on the tragic 1914 Newfoundland sealing disaster. Among these formative etchings is The Master Watch (1966), an important example of the early work that helped establish Blackwood as one of Canada’s leading printmakers.
