Literature
Philip Fry, Alex Colville: Embarkation, The Genesis of a Painting, 1994, from the edition, reproduced page 17.
Colville produced his own serigraph prints, carefully controlling every stage to ensure precision and fidelity to his vision. He turned to printmaking to make his art more accessible, while maintaining the same discipline and detail found in his paintings.
Stove, like many of his works, is set in an ordinary domestic space—likely his own kitchen in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Colville depicts, likely his wife Rhoda and their dog, gazing into a large, black Aga stove. Colville is known for his realistic style, often with elements of mystery and a sense of unease, both present in this serigraph from 1988.
