Alfred Joseph Casson was best known for his association with the Group of Seven and his dedication to capturing the character of rural Ontario. Casson’s strong design background shaped a unique painting style distinguished by graceful lines and carefully composed scenes. Unlike other members of the Group of Seven who focused on wilderness landscapes, Casson depicted rural Ontario with a refined sense of order. Over time, as seen here in Snow Clouds c.1958, Casson’s style evolved with his use of light and dark becoming more flattened and his compositions increasingly pattern-like, reflecting both his artistic development and continued ties to the commercial art world.
