Born in Calgary, Doris McCarthy (1910–2010) studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1926 to 1930 before becoming a long-time teacher at Central Technical School in Toronto. Though based in Scarborough, Ontario, she traveled extensively, painting landscapes from Costa Rica to Ireland, but was best known for her Canadian scenes. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected, including by the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. A recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario, McCarthy also wrote three autobiographies chronicling her life and artistic journey.
