Group of Seven member Edwin Holgate made several painting trips to Natashquan and the Labrador coast during the 1930s and 1940s. The rugged beauty and isolation of the region reflect both Holgate’s technical precision and a deep reverence for the Canadian landscape. In May of 2008 an oil sketch of similar subject sold at auction for $149,500, the second highest price ever paid for an Edwin Holgate oil on panel at auction.
