The relationship of man to his natural environment was a recurring theme in Carmichael’s work. The early sketchbooks contain everyday scenes of city life as well as isolated northern villages, farm buildings of southern Ontario and the sawmills and silver mines of the frontier. Truly, the human presence was never far from Carmichael’s mind as he sketched and painted.  Our oil sketch depicting Erin, Ontario was used as a study for a large format watercolour painted the next year.
