A whimsical scene of prairie life with a deeper meaning. In City Slickers Dismayed Kurelek contrasts rural authenticity with urban detachment, using humour to expose the naivety of city dwellers removed from the realities of farm life. Although lighter in tone than his apocalyptic works of the 1960s, the painting still reflects Kurelek’s enduring moral vision—his belief that humility, honest labour, and simple living embody values often lost in modern, materialistic society.
