William Perehudoff was a central figure in the development of abstract painting in Western Canada. Based in Saskatchewan, he brought a sophisticated understanding of colour theory and modernist structure to the Prairies, creating luminous hard-edge compositions that balanced restraint with lyricism. Influenced by American abstraction yet deeply rooted in the expansive light and openness of the West, Perehudoff helped establish the region as a serious centre for contemporary painting. His decades of teaching and exhibiting shaped generations of artists and secured his place as one of Western Canada’s most important modernists.
