Franklin Carmichael
Untitled, Grace Lake, LaCloche circa 1930

Provenance

Carmichael estate by descent

Private collection, Ontario

The La Cloche region of Ontario was Carmichael’s most important sketching ground. Carmichael first visited the area in 1924. Its sweeping landscape and distinctive quartzite hills drew him back annually until his death in 1945. Recently burned terrain around Grace and Cranberry Lakes, with its stark hill forms and exceptional light, became central to his work. Carmichael built a summer cabin nearby, and this view of Grace Lake was easily accessible. This fine oil sketch invites us to see alongside the artist, revealing Carmichael’s keen sense of observation and masterful command of colour, form, and light.
